Wednesday, we received this email from VARAtifyERA regarding Delegate Helsel:
Today Kati Hornung, our Campaign Coordinator, met with Delegate Helsel. The meeting went very well. He has indicated he will read the legislator's notebook and had a couple of questions, the primary question being whether or not the Equal Rights Amendment was really necessary. After a discussion about strict scrutiny vs. intermediate scrutiny he seemed to understand that there was a real reason behind this push for equality.
Delegate Helsel is particularly interested in the listing of citizens in his district who are supportive of the Equal Rights Amendment. In the Hampton area his district has one of the smaller numbers of supporters in our petition (about 45).
While it's troubling that Del. Helsel questioned whether the ERA was 'really necessary', I'm willing to give him the opportunity to show his willingness to listen to his constituents. Please sign this petition to make sure he hears our voices!
Virginia has the historical opportunity to be the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, adding 24 important words to the U.S. Constitution: Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
81% of Virginian voters support ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment.
YES! I live in Virginia's 91st Delegate District and want Virginia to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment!
